Loys Egg and Peter Weibel

The artists Peter Weibel and Loys Egg enjoy a longstanding friendship, which has resulted in many collaborative projects. Their 'Bibliotheca Insomnia' dates from 1978-79. Aiming to renew the expressiveness of traditional painting, they created a body of around 170 works on paper, a library that consists neither of pictures nor books, but of pictorial works. The principles of participation and interactivity play a crucial role, as the work by the one artist was augmented in different media and with text by the other, thus expanding the traditional formal visual language to create a peinture conceptuelle and peinture parole. Die Künstler Peter Weibel und Loys Egg verbindet eine langjährige Freundschaft, die in vielen gemeinsamen Projekten ihren Niederschlag fand. 1978/79 entstand 'Bibliotheca Insomnia'. Mit dem Ziel, die Ausdrucksfähigkeit der traditionellen Malerei zu erneuern, schufen sie ein Konvolut von rund 170 Blättern, eine Bibliothek, die weder aus Bildern noch aus Büchern besteht, sondern aus Bildwerken. Die Prinzipien Partizipation und Interaktivität spielen eine entscheidende Rolle, wenn die Arbeit des jeweils andern durch materialhafte Überarbeitungen und 'Wortsprache' angereichert und so die traditionelle formale Zeichensprache erweitert wird.
