A series of conversations in which a married woman describes to friends her long affair with a theology student, its impact on her children, and the drama which followed when her husband found out. The novel is notable for the presence of an author's voice who, like the chorus in a Greek tragedy, comments and interprets the heroine's confessions and the reaction they provoke in her listeners.
