Fragments of implements dating from the early Stone Age (8000 BCE - before common era) have been recovered from the Alaknanda Valley in Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh), and prehistoric implements discovered near Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) as well as further evidence from Himachal Pradesh all testify to the antiquity of human habitation.
