About the Author Arwin D. Smallwood is the Director of African-American Studies and Associate Professor of History at Bradley University. His other publications include Blacks at Bradley and Bertie County, North Carolina and the Making of America. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and his M.A. in History, both from North Carolina Central University, and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. A member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the Southern Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Historical Association, he has been a pioneer in the study of rural landscapes and their historical and contemporary impact on African Americans. He is the recipient of a number of awards, including the FOCUS Fellowship from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Archie K. Davis Fellowship, and the First Year Faculty Teaching Award from Bradley University.
