Though many of the stories have humorous moments, the overall atmosphere is dark. Richard Ford is a better writer than he is a reader. His breathing is audible throughout the tapes, and at times it produces a labored delivery that interferes with pacing and emphasis. In addition, his voice sometimes sounds tired.
