Collected Papers of James Meade

This book comprises both previously published papers and hitherto unpublished memoranda written either for the Labour Party in the 1930s, while Meade was teaching in Oxford, or during his period of government service, in the economic section of the Cabinet Offices. The focus of these articles is international economics. Several articles reflect his involvement in the discussions and conferences on the post-war international economic order which led to the establishment of the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Others indicate his views on the problems of the world economy as they evolved after 1947. This volume also contains Meade's most recent paper on open economy macro-economics first presented in Cambridge in July 1987. Other chapters cover his related work on customs unions and free trade areas. Meade was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1977 (jointly with Bertil Shlin) for his contributions in international economics.
