Social and Political Theory

This is the first anthology that includes historical works as well as contemporary works by women and by men of color-works that were, in their time, avidly read and debated. It is both historically and sociologically accurate and restores to the canon works that were excluded because they represented the voices of "the other." Short biographies on each theorist provide social and biographical contexts for the work. The book is divided into three sections: The Rise of Society, the Market, and the State; The Critique of Capitalist Production, Industrial Society, and the Democratic State; and The Critique of Consumption, Rationality, and Imperialism. Theorists represented include: John Locke, Thomas Paine, Frederick Douglass, Karl Marx, Charlotte Gilman, Virginia Woolf, and others. Political and social theorists.
